Oddhobby TV Notes On Usenet: Borderline, on my bubble
Chuck
I cannot stand his best friend. I always joke with my friends saying
I hope they blow him up. Then there was an episode that showed him on
a boat that was about to be missile struck and we all laughed because
it looked like my dream was coming true! But alas, he lives. I'm not
a big fan of the main character either, but it's not as much casting
or acting as it is writing and direction. I like the rest of the
cast. (BTW in the boat episode, the dinner with Korean mom and dad
could have been much, much funnier).
Samantha Who
I like Ms. Applegate, and I like the mom from Boston Legal, and this
show is ok. I just don't see making room on the dvr for it. It
doesn't have a back story that makes me think it's going to deliver
anything worth my devotion.
Boston Legal
Yes, it's just a TV show, but I think people who still buy colon
cleansers are more savvy than whoever plots their political
positions. Danny Crain is still funny, the wacky judges are still
funny, but Alan's arguments have become formulaic, predicable and one
sided to the point where it's hard to believe, he believes.
John From Cincinnati
OK, I like strange almost as much as I like sci-fi. JFC was a little
too slow in the reveal, and a little too non-sequitur. We can only
store so many abstract bits of odd in our heads before the writer has
to give us someplace to put it... or maybe I wasn't baked to the point
of understanding.
Journeyman
I read it was canceled, too bad I kind of liked it and was willing to
give it a chance.
Life
The lead reminds me of Steve McQueen, or at least the pictures I've
seen of him (he was before my time).
Ghost Whisperer
This is much better than it was, but I still don't like ghost shows
where they get to make up rules as they go... one of the reasons I
liked Charmed is that they had several different authorities (Grandma,
the book of shadows, etc) that explained what steps were needed to
deal with the various magical creatures. Like I said they're getting
better by having the professor, but it's still a little to "romantic"
for me. Oh, and yes, she's put on weight. But rather than try to
hide it they should let those of us who enjoy an occasional wide load
enjoy! I think it's funny they're willing to throw in "a little"
cleavage but they keep blocking the butt.
Supernatural
Also much better than it was. They added a couple of regular female
characters, that's good. But there's still something missing from the
show. I guess I need more than 2 sometimes 3 main characters.
Torchwood (long, my notes, not a 'real review')
The show is very, very confused, it really is a mess. I know what
they say they're trying to do, but it really fails on so many
levels.
"In 2002, before the revival of Doctor Who, Russell T. Davies began to
develop an idea for a science-fiction/crime drama in the style of
American dramas like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel."
I'm tempted to write a full review, but I'll keep it short and fuzzy.
Jack Harkness: Creepy looking dude that somehow became the Torchwood
leader. By whose authority? Whatever authority it is, it's
"recognized," because the police give way to torchwood. So why not
rebuild it to something less garage band like?
Gwen Cooper: A cop recruited by Torchwood (love the gap, and the hair;
nice acting style, maybe a bit over the top at times). So, England
was invaded by aliens (see Doctor Who) and Torchwood exists to fight,
um, weirdness; yet we still have to listen to people (eg her
boyfriend) say how unbelievable an alien presence is. (Yeah, I could
write that better, but like I said, these are my notes.)
Dr. Owen Harper a skinny little frog guy (he has no lips) who acts
tough and shows no respect for the attractive Dr. To****ko Sato who for
reasons I'll never understand is in love with him.
Ianto Jones: The most disappointing character of the lot. He could
be more like an "Avenger" character (the old Brit TV show) , or more
of a Giles (Buffy) character, or some original, mysterious British
character. Instead he's just an intern/custodian ("general
sup****t"). Dozens or perhaps hundreds of Torchwood personnel killed,
and this is what survives and gets made into a show.
Angel was a great spinoff, no? What if they took Willow's girlfriend
and made a spin off? Blah! That's what. That's what I think of
Torchwood. Blah. Oh, one more thing, the HQ. Who designed that?
Yes, they saved air conditioning energy by placing the morgue in the
data center, but you'd think Jack could crank up the gay stereotype
and do some decorating. And what about that silly rolling door that...
oh never mind.
Heroes
My guess is many of you think this is a 5 star show. I do like it,
for the most part, but it's not a 5 star show (IMHO). I don't like
some of the characters, some of their behavior is inconsistent. I'm
also not happy with the casting.
I watch "The Wire" and see nothing but award winning Black actors, I
watch Heroes and all the Black actors make me think I'm watching a Mc
Donald's commercial. Nichols doesn't work as a grandmother, at least
not the grandmother of that family. Leonard Roberts who played
Micah's father was OK, but the rest of the Black cast doesn't work for
me, not as a family.
The show opens with words of wisdom from Mohinder, but I'm not sure I
see him as a particularly bright character. I liked the first season
much better than season 2. Too bad, I really wanted to like this show.
