That is rather the point of Science Fiction though, isn't it?  As I see
it, 
anyway, the genre explores "what if" scenarios (hopefully more subtly than

this episode, granted).  I feel the same frustration when asked to become 
emotionally involved in events that don't really happen but then I
remember 
that none of this is ever going to happen and it gets much better. :-)
