I'll say it again, read "Guns, Germs, and Steel."  From your postings,
I'd bet that you'll enjoy it.  If you don't like to read (what are you
doing on usenet? ;) ), there's a video version, as well, but I haven't
seen it to judge the quality.  I don't have the book in front of me,
and it was a couple years back when I read it, so I can't remember the
reasons that buffalo weren't domesticated.  For llamas, it was a
combination of their poor attitude and limited range which made them
unsuitable.
If I get time tonight, I'll dig out the book and look into the buffalo
issue.
