Well, when your very presence is a large fla****ng neon 'eat here' sign 
to any suitably equipped or skilled predators, a good flight reflex is a 
good survival adaptation. Too bad they couldn't make the mental jump 
from fleeing from natives with spears, to fleeing men on horseback (or 
the Iron Horse) with fire sticks. From historical accounts, they were 
clueless and just stood there dumbfounded. 'Dangerous even at a 
distance' is a difficult concept, if you have never encountered it.
