Not to denigrate his achievements at all, but it is easier to stand out
when you are earlier. There are probably writers as great as those four
now, but there are so many it is difficult to rise above the crowd.
There are probably writers as good as Shakespeare (and the other greats
of his time!) around now, but they are likely to be writing television,
and they don't stand out as much because (a) there is a bigger crowd of
achievers, and (b) there are so many arenas now.
