"Against the Fall of Night" was a sort of early version of _The
City and the Stars_.  It was a short novel, I've only seen it
paired with another in a book with the unwieldy title: "The Lion
of Comarre and Against the Fall of Night."

No, wait.  There was _Beyond the Fall of Night_, by Clarke and...
Gregory Benford(?). I think it's Clarke's novel and a sequel by
the other fellow.  Look for that to read "Against the Fall of
Night."  Whatever you do, do NOT read the sequel!
