I seriously doubt if there are enough fans of the book to make the
slightest 
dent in the ratings even if they translated the books word for word.  It's

not as if several million fans of the book watched the first episode and 
then tuned out because it wasn't faithful...is it?

I was able to follow the plots without the benefit of having read the
books 
before watching the series.
