My guess would be that Lapidus was told to make a landing far away from
the 
known encampments, namely Otherville and the beach, so the team could make

a surprise approach by land. During a passby to get the lay of the land, 
the location of The Temple may have been discovered, or the Others 
traveling there may have been spotted or tracked. Ideally, there is to be 
nobody on the island left to tell the tale, so Richard and all the Others 
would have to be killed, as well. Especially Cindy and the children, if
the  
freighter crew are even aware of their status at all.
