You might not realize how epically silly it is :)  Stop and consider the 
total relativity of all motion, and then ask yourself: Why would the
earth's 
core become rotationally stationary relative to the sun?

As I understand it, the core's rotation differential relative to the 
mantle/crust is minute; the planet pretty much rotates at the same speed. 
Like the crust revolves an inch per year slower than the mantle or 
something, and THAT causes earthquakes that knock down cities.

And if the earth suddenly stopped rotating, LOL, realize that the ground 
would accelerate to 1000 mph beneath our feet (okay maybe 500 mph in the
US) 
over whatever period of time it took to stop.  Yeah, that might attract 
attention.

But really.  I don't want to take away from the fantastic achievement of
the 
actual movie.
