The buy-direct model hasn't quite matured enough to be the primary means
of distribution, so I think shows like Jericho and Journeyman are still
stuck with having to get Sci-Fi or The CW or some some major cable
net to agree to a reasonable license fee for an early viewing window.
In Canada, CTV aired the first episode of Jericho season 2, but the show
quickly switched to a lesser net they own called the A-Channel, and then
the Space Channel on the weekend, which is also owned by CTV now.
Jericho just couldn't pull in big network numbers in Canada. Switching
to Global (the other big network in Canada, not as big as CTV), would
not have worked any more than switching Jericho to ABC, NBC or Fox
in the U.S. would work. They have to look at a package deal where
their revenues come from a variety of sources, with reasonable license
fees to smaller nets or cable channels (domestic and foreign) being an
early window, but the core market also being tapped for buy-direct
support (e,g, season 2 DVD, Season 3 DVD or online pre-sales).
