There were LOTS of loose ends.  The US is such a major player in world
affairs that the power vacuum created would have resulted in minor and
major regional wars all over the place.  The Middle East, Taiwan,
Africa, the Balkans, to name just a few.  At least one, the Middle
East, would have almost certainly gone nuclear, and possible Taiwan.

Of course, there may have been events which would have been reveled as
the story progressed.  For instance, the ASA news was saying that the
rest of the world declined to get involved, and later we find that
there was a UN Blue Line along the Mississippi.
