Just googling, it may be the maxshuster.com site for a Max Shuster who's
a photographer.  Whoever did the NY Times article may have been aware
of Max, or ran across that site checking their facts and assumed he was
the Superman artist.  Then Variety used the NY Times article, which
would also have been picked up elsewhere, and maybe this error keeps
popping up for years.
