Hyperion wouldn't be my first choice for a Simmons adaptation - for
pretty much the reasons noted, plus the budget requirements to have
special effects that do the book justice.

Song of Kali - nice, but could be seen as a bit, hmmm, critical of
others.  IIRC it opens with "I see a mushroom cloud over Calcutta and
I am glad".

Carrion Comfort would be best, methink.  It would a challenge to avoid
the adaptation sinking into B-movie status, but good actors and
direction could do it.

Summer of Night - easy to do, but strictly B-movie material, without
any of the epic qualities of Carrion Comfort.

Illium + Olympos - all the drawbacks and risks of Hyperion, minus a
plot that goes somewhere.
