Yeah - we need to get to work on the moon. We can mine a fortune of metals
and volatiles there, do im****tant research, set up powerful radio and
optical telescopes ****elded from the earth, and at the same time learn
what
it really means to be a spacefaring civilization. We don't need a space
race to mars - when it comes time to send people there, it will be *easy*
for us, because the infrastructure will be built to do it. At the moment,
we don't even know of a good way to safely land people on mars - we're not
exactly going to use the soccer ball method.

NASA needs real work to do, and it needs to be more than reformed - it
needs to have every position from janitor on up put under review by
scientists, not freaking bureaucrats. I have some respect for what they're
trying to do with constellation, but I think they could do a hell of a lot
better. 

What I really want to see is a space elevator before any of this - carbon
nanotube-based have already been shown in the lab to be strong enough.
There's only the mass production to be worked out. *
