It appears obvious that he had [just] started the training.  However, he
was
part of the LAST string and that might have been his first time in a real
cockpit (vs. a training simulator).

The evidence sup****ts one position over the other and they have only one
battlestar.  If they still had two, the journey may be different.

didn't
