  I'm not.  It's a serious question.  Any design to be adopted had
better be able to withstand ground-based bombs, bombs hidden in cargo
and exploded in transit or at the space-side terminus, and impact upon
the elevator by kamikaze aircraft, etc.

  I ask the question because my knowledge of space elevator design goes
no deeper than the details discussed in passing in Niven's "Barsoom
Project".

  The details about the lapses and idiocies that led to 9/11 aren't
relevant here.  Only the fact that any space elevator would be an
undeniable target to whackos of all political and religious bent.
