"Evil Alien Nazis" was perhaps the silliest idea in "Enterprise", so
looking for intelligent background of that sort is probably pointless;
but then again, what the hell.
Even if Russia were not industrialised, the agrarian vastnesses of the
Ukraine and surrounding areas would have made a useful breadbasket to
supply troops in a protracted war. And it's questionable how far 'fear
of Communism' propelled Hitler to power (though it was clearly a
contributory factor). The economic collapse of Germany during the
Weimar period encouraged political extremism.
