Variety-speak for 'network series'.
The networks are 'nets' or 'webs'. by derivation, the individual series
are strands in the net, i.e. skeins.
Over time it has come to refer to any series (but not individual shows).
Strictly speaking, Wizard's First Rule wouldn't qualify as a skein in the
original usage, since it isn't part of a net.
