Ah, but they can always take it to the SciFi channel if Fox cancels
it. By that point the premise will already be established and many of
the sunk costs covered so it's an easier sell to another network.
Plus, you can never be sure it will be cancelled right away. It may
last for half a season or more (possible), or it may be one of those
shows that clicks with the viewers and last for multiple seasons
(unlikely.) Certainly the concept allows for the kinds of things that
viewers enjoy since much of the show can be in the current period with
the action/adventure stories. Whether they can pull it off will depend
on writing, acting and of course, the budget.
