Hmm, 27 AD? nearly 2000 years ago ... yeah, last season finale had him
dead
for 3 days.

There was pirate who was left on a deserted island who kept dying of
starvation for a few hundred years.

Either John thot he was out of range only to be surprised by Gray's
presence
(and foreshadowing events "later", episode-wise [time travel grammar can
be
tricky]) or John was setting up Jack for the surprise of Gray's return,
thinking someone ELSE was controlling him, allowing Gray to get up close
and
personal.
I lean toward the latter.

Wrong tense--cuz otherwise there's major counterargument for Willow
Rosenberg, Colonel Samantha Carter, Sydney Bloom, Patricia McPherson.
And going with the present tense, Anna Wu.
