Yes , absolutely.
I'm a huge fan , and had watched Serenity with my girlfriend a year or so
back.
She enjoyed it , but we recently watched all of Firefly which she now
loves
and re-watched Serenity which she said was far better second time round.

Mankind had left earth and settled in a new solar system on plenty of
planets and dozens of moons.
There had been a civil war , effectively between the government and rebels
,
which the government won.
The series is set after the war on an independently owned freighter that
tends to stay on the slightly suspect side of the law to make a living.
The back story of most of the crew is explained in one of the episodes ,
though there was more detail that was due to come out in later seasons.
The plot of Serenity is basically a highly condensed version of the second
season story arc
