There's really no such thing as a "sector" where anything in an adjacent
one is invisible. Here on earth we can see stars and galaxies billions of
light years away.

It's unlikely that Earth is anything like that far away from the old
colonies - they're probably in the same galaxy, which while a big place,
isn't all that hard for a technological species to survey. If they can
identify just 4 (or is it 5?) of the astronomical objects in the map, they
can nail down earth's position by careful angular measurements and
trigonometry. 

So, the signpost idea isn't that far off, but someone saying they're
seeing
a trinary system with their ****d eye is wildly unlikely.

If she says she saw a trinary star, she was NOT on earth, since none are
****d eye resolvable. Now, it's possible that the write thought they were
being clever and had the centauri system in mind. But it's not actually
clever because it rules earth's actual position out. *
