I'm a sci fi fan from way back too. I've gone to cons, wore costumes as 
appropriate but never confused the shows/actors with reality. Sci fi was 
a way to escape from the hum drum realities of real life.

Regardless of the writing or the acting, every show leaves its mark on 
the culture around us. If the producers/creators want to dress up what's 
going on in the real world in the trappings of another futuristic 
society, let them.

Some shows, like ST:TNG or even the current BSG, are parables into the 
workings of the human condition. Others are just entertainment for 
escapists like myself. I despise the so-called reality shows or the 
political analysis shows or the over-contrived sitcoms. Some of the more 
"realistic" shows like CSI or Law & Order are compressed views of how 
the system supposedly works and is sometimes entertaining.

One man's dish is another man's poison. YMMV!
