Well said. A good illustration of your point would be to compare BSG with 
Space: Above and Beyond. Both series have very similar themes, but I
enjoyed 
S:AAB much more because, like you said, it's about the natural human 
tendency to develop strong bonds during grim situations and to employ
humor 
as a coping mechanism.

I can appreciate that BSG's writers want to emphasize humanity's 
imperfections, but the grimness and pettiness that permeates the series is

so overdone that it doesn't seem realistic. On the other end of the 
spectrum, there's Star Trek: TNG that's equally as phony and humorless 
because most of the characters are too noble and politically correct. An 
accurate ****trayal of the human condition is somewhere in the middle of 
these two extremes.
