Most of that is pretty well established in the opening narration,
and what isn't is set up in the pilot, so you'll figure it out
soon enough. But if you want the short version now...

Some time in the future, Earth becomes uninhabitable, or close
enough as makes no difference. A whole lot of people get on
space****ps and colonize a bunch of planets far, far away - it's
deliberately vague how many planets, how far from Earth, and how
close to each other.

Some of those planets are nice, comfortable Earthlike worlds, some
are deserts barely habitable even after extensive terraforming.
Some of the colonists arrived in style and built high-tech cities,
others were poor refugees who could barely manage to make the trip
at all, arrived with next to nothing, and regressed to subsistence
agriculture. And all the various in-between possibilities.

No aliens. Lots of Chinese

Space war, one, in the past. A dispute over whether all these
planets would be ruled by a strong, centralized government or left
to each go their own way, was resolved about ten years before the
start of the story by something rather reminiscient of the American
Civil War.

The Union, er, "Alliance", won. Not because they were the good guys.
Not because they were the bad guys, either. Because they were the
eight hundred pound gorilla that's going to do whatever it wants and
there isn't anything anyone else can do about that except try not
to get stomped on.

Malcome Reynolds was a skilled, courageous, and successful Confederate
soldier, thus left rather out-of-place in the New Transworld Order.
He and a few like-minded misfits pooled their resources, bought a
worn-out space****p, and tried to make a living as traders, smugglers,
mercenaries, whatever paid the bills that week and lets them steer
clear of the gorilla a bit longer.
