I do believe you'e right (and I can't believe it's never occurred to me). 
I've heard the story thusly: Olivier comments on how ****y Hoffman looks.

Hoffman responds that since his character has been up all night, he has
too. 
Olivier quips, "My dear boy, that's why they call it ACTING."

Even if it never happened, it seems famous enough for Mr. Lovitz to have 
heard it.
