Demotion seemed justified given the fact that he had just been the cause
of 
a spacecraft crash that could have cost the life of the crew and/or use of

the landing deck.  He followed it up by direct insubordination as he got 
into a confrontational argument with Adama.

Still, I think the real reason that Adama demoted him is that he asked to
be 
demoted.  His actions suggested that he wasn't prepared to do his current 
job.  His recent past (loss of his wife) suggested that he needed some
time 
off to gather himself while doing a less critical job.  His verbal words 
were simply his 'begging' to be relieved of his current stress level. 
Adama 
was trying to help him by giving him what he asked for (and likely
needed).
