Which is why it sucks. If they set it in the same universe, with no
direct conenction to the original cast, it would open up venues for
interesting story ideas: when characters from the original series show
up, or there are direct sequels to some of the stories.
It would've been interesting, our character would run into this giant
anti-Federation force, numbering in the tens of thousands and perfectly
organized, and after a while we discover that they are lead by Orac and
lead out of the old team's base.
Or we find that Vila now owns an entire planet and has essentially made
it the Riza of the Blake's 7 universe. (i.e. casinos, drug dens and whore
houses the size of entire continents).
Of course, one of the benefits of the reboot is they can eliminate the
supernatual elements (god-like beings) and aliens, leaving it in a
universe like the one that Firefly and BSG occupy.
