I saw it and maybe I miss phrased myself by saying he "let" his
daughter die. But his attempts to manipulate the guy seemed pretty
counter-intuitive to me. I actually half-expected Smokey to go after
the guy while he still had a gun to the girl's head. (I guess that
means that Ben can call the smoke monster but can't control it.) So in
the end, the master manipulator is exposed, if only for a moment as a
bad father with poor judgment. It's supremely ironic that Ben
alienated Alex and the one time she needs him to be cunning bastard,
he outsmarts himself. It almost seems like a metaphor for poor
parenting.
