That's what I saw.  At first I thought I'd misspelled, went back to
check and discovered that I hadn't.

No, I'm using OE-QuoteFix, and it's responsible for that.  After
OE-QuoteFix conditions a post, my sig is always medium grey.  It also
fixes top posting and color codes the nested replies in a post.
