Newsgroups are quite easy to similarly bombard.

But again, I'm not saying I don't like polls.  I like to see the
_results_ of polls quite a bit.   I watch some TV shows by recording the
show, waiting for the poll, and not watching if it's as stinker.  But
for that web polls are by far the winner, and I have found they work,
in spite of your concern over automated hacking of them.

Follows to newsgoup posts are meant to be for everybody.   You
could do the poll with a note to please e-mail the vote rather than
post it.      Discussions should start their own thread with a subject
to identify the discussion.

BTW, I don't ready the 5-star poll thread by and large.   Thus I
miss several discussions I probably would like to read, but also miss
several I would not like, as well as the vote posts.   So if you
are writing so people will read your view, you lose readers if you
do it in a generic thread, I suspect.   It's not that there are not
good posts, it's just that many of us only have the time to read
where there is good signal to noise to select what we will read.
