You probably should have expected a lot of the responses you got.

At least, I did, because when I saw your post, my first urge was
to reply with a "phooey on you, too" message.  And this was even
before I read your post.  I have suppressed the urge, at least
long enough to read your post, and you do make many good points.

I will go you one step further: I don't even care about the
results, which are just an aggregate of the individual votes
which I don't care about.  As said, the results are posted under
a new subject, and when done close enough to the original airing
of the show sometimes turn into a discussion thread as well.

Ideally, yes.  However, I know I'm not much of a starter.  Often
I have only a small point or thing to discuss, and don't want to
make my own thread for it, so I'll wait for someone else to start
a discussion (that I can derail :).

A lot of posters seem to save their discussion for the poll
thread.  Other non-starters, or a "it's Tradition!" effect?

Yep.  Annoying to me, too.  However, even on dialup, it's just a
momentary annoyance to download all the messages in such a thread
and grimace when I come on such a response.
