All throughout the series Jack has always been willing to pursue even 
the faintest of hopes.  I can't imagine what would cause him to totally 
give up on those who remained on the island.  He must believe that it is 
totally impossible to rescue them.  Up to now he has never chosen a 
selfish course of action.
