Sure, but then people don't get sick because "the Island" doesn't like
them.

I'm not convinced.  Whatever the island is it seems to attract the worst
sort of people and/or bring out the worst in people and/or drive people
to do irrational and/or very stupid/dangerous things.  Certainly nominally
neutral things can have such effects, but in the absence of any obvious
redeeming characteristics it might be best to nuke the island from orbit.
It's the only way to be sure...
