For me, this is right up there with the best of the season. Funny,
heartbreaking, gross as hell, and I thought Steven Williams was
lovely. Mr. X! I didn't think he was more extreme than Sam or Dean,
just at a different stage of the game, and with another decade or two
of heartache and world-weariness. I have my speculations about his
purpose and hope he returns to make good on it.
I am mixed about the loss of Bela, because I think you don't know
(can't know) the emotional impact of these antagonistic characters
until they are really up against the wall. Same with Meg, I latched
onto her mostly when she croaked. Felt the same with Jo prior to her
getting the metaphorical boot. Ah well. I do think that the abuse
that Bela suffered in no way excused her post-deal actions, but
instead serves as a contrast to Dean's choices, where he maintained
something of his integrity. Not to draw any connection between the
abuse of their childhoods, or the suffering they've felt, but to make
the deal and kill her parents is one thing given what she's done, but
to brutally and immorally try and save herself from the demons as a
result? To me, that wasn't a pity party and it wasn't about
redemption, as Dean says, it's weeks past that and her torture is
knowing that they truly would have tried to helped her if she could
have just come to them and explained.
Also, Sam getting his eye scooped out by a melon baller? Perfect.
