The external brain was a bit silly, I agree.

In the year 2008, why are people still murdered with knives and
machetes? Because they still work. Lasers and phasers may be
expensive. They may be unreliable. They may have high maintenance
costs. The AK47 was invented in 1947 (hence the name) and still works.
Good designs survive. I'm reminded of the Stargate episode where Thor
tells Carter that they'd never have thought of using primitive lead
projectiles to destroy replicators, even though their more advanced
weapons were useless against the critters.

toilet facilities either.
