In real life, it's far more likely that people will take it as a given
that no one can possibly live that long, therefore John is either 1)
kidding about having been around longer than 100 years, 2) deluded about
same, or else 3) trying to perpetrate a con for reasons not quite clear. 
At least, those are the only possibilities I'd seriously consider if
confronted with someone like him.  That's why I thought that hiding in
plain sight was an intelligent strategy for the character to use with
other characters, and was refre****ng for the writers to use to give the
audience a different approach to a familiar premise.
