I think you're reffering to Anne McCaffery. Typical of her series',
the first few are good and the later ones have rapidily declining
quality.
I think "Pegasus in Flight" and "To Ride Pegasus" are some of the
early ones (or something like that. I can't recall the order
either...). First few books are Earth based and are generally as you
request. After that, they turn into "space" books.
