Hmm, I hardly see any spam on this group, though it might be that my
news provider already filtered it out for me. Most newsreader software
enable you to set up filters, not sure about Google Groups though. (I
think you know Google Groups is just an interface to access r.a.sf.w.r-j
which is a newsgroup on Usenet, right?) This might be a starting point
to find out about different newsreaders:

Myself I'm using news.individual.net, which requires a smell yearly
charge, but I think you could find a decent free server as long as you
don't need access to the binaries groups.
