Not true. The Bachman books didn't sell anywhere near as well as the
King books, and only sold in respectable amounts when they were
republished under King's own name.
In this regard, Jordan actually seems to have surpassed King; the
books written under Jordan's various pseudonyms do all seem to be
selling quite well.
However, if an author gets too popular, there's a a danger that their
editor will be less willing to point out flaws in their work. After a
point, a writer becomes popular enough to sell books on star power
alone, and the editor doesn't want such an asset running to another
company who would be all too willing to publish whatever the writer
might churn out. As has been mentioned already in this thread, this is
what happened to Jordan - he got too popular, and Tor wasn't willing
to ask him to cut down on all the clothing descriptions, braid
pulling, and foldage of arms beneath breasts.
