From the Jan 08 issue in "Milestones":
New research by writer John Pierce reveals that Lester del Rey
had a secret early life: his real name was Leonard Knapp, not
Ramon Felipe Alvarez-del Rey, and his family did not die in
a 1935 car accident, as he always claimed. His entire Spanish
background was invented. His surviving sister Sara Knapp says
he broke all ties with his family after leaving home in 1931,
and that he "seemed to be ashamed of where he lived and of
his folks." The 1935 car accident actually took the life of
del Rey's previously unknown first wife. His brother Leon
Wright Knapp died recently. Del Rey died in 1993.
I wonder how much re-inventing like that you could do in the current
age of do***ent trails and credit re****ts..
