It occurs to me that if a book were printed in clear inks which required
the took to be soaked in a chemical solution to stain the lettering to
make them visible, they would be books to dye before you read.

So... has this trick ever been done at book length, as opposed to
simple "secret messages" or notes on single sheets?

Um.  In an SF story, I mean.
