I'm looking for the title of a book (I think the story may actually be
a 3 part series) set on Earth in the distant future. People live in an
idealized community based on ancient Greece or Rome. They either see
through a device, or have it implanted in them, so that everyone looks
healthy, hale, and beautiful.
There are creatures that the main character can see that come from
somewhere near Pluto. I think they are kind of transparent and maybe
purplish. The main character's wife has put herself into stasis or in
slow suicide. The population loves big celebrations and living in
their false world. The main guy gets in trouble somehow (asking too
many questions?), ends up on trial, and gets kicked out of their
world. He has a life-sup****ting body suit that enables him to descend
down an incredibly long stairway to the Earth's surface.
In the last volume, I think he gets access to a space ****p and either
goes off to talk with the Pluto population that has been watching
Earth, or he goes through a wormhole or something.
My description is lame, but does it remind anyone of any specific book
or author?
Thank you.
