Ancient Evenings

by Gene Ward Smith <gene@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Feb 4, 2008 at 05:12 AM

Given Mailer's recent death and a little discussion of The
****d and the Dead here, I thought it might be a time to ask
if anyone here got the point of this book, a fantasy novel by
Mailer, and if so, what it was. I kept having the feeling
there was something on Mailer's mind I was missing.

Most reviewers hated it. On the other hand, Wikipedia tells
us:

Derided by many, it is included in the canonical listing of
Harold Bloom in The Western Canon and books celebrated in
Ninety-Nine Novels: The Best in English since 1939 by Anthony
Burgess.

Some people out there got it, whatever "it" was, I guess.
