Part of that sounds kind of maybe a little like the end of _A Canticle
for Leibowitz_. Not too many "Catholics in Space!" stories that I can
think of.

Can you remember anything else about it? What year you read it?
What the cover looked like? The name of the hero's sidekick's pet?
Little details can help jog peoples' memories...
