It may be back.  As I understand it, since the most recent set of 
changes DC is waffling on whether he had a costumed Superboy career 
till the lawsuit with the Siegels is over, but his powers have been 
pushed further back in his life and he spent some time as a member 
of (some version of) the Legion of Super-Heroes.  (They may 
eventually settle on the same solution as the TV cartoon: have him a 
member as a teenager but use "Superman" from the start.)

Of course, if he doesn't have any powers, that makes it easier to 
run blood tests and get other cell samples, which (depending on how 
Kryptonians are being ****trayed in a given week, and how deeply they 
probe) may well turn up anomalies.  (At one point in the 90s, I 
think Superman was said to have a triple-helix in his chromosomes, 
for example, which might make for some interesting PCR results if 
things got that far.  On the other hand, as previously observed, in 
the Silver Age Superman's blood was not only human-compatible, but 
could bestow tem****ary super-powers.)
