After not watching Trek for many years, apart from the movies, I was
pleasantly surprised with Kirk in the original series. It's just that
his command style was very much misdirection and being a sneaky
bastard rather than charging straight in, given a choice.  Very Miles
Vorkosigan. Er, Naismith.

I think this has been obscured since by (a) William Shatner's
explosive ego growth since the original series and (b) the movies'
attempt to show Shatner the way he wanted to be shown. The original
Kirk was not a nice man in many ways, but he was better at keeping his
crew alive than his later reputation would warrant.
