I still think Beltrami gave the first rigorous independence proof, as he
showed that if the axioms of Euclidean geometry were consistent, so were
those of hyperbolic geometry, and vice-versa. When Hilbert proved the
consistency of Euclidean geometry, hyperbolic geometry therefore followed.
