A question about Lensman Series of Edward Smith

I'm into second of the 6 books - reading Smith for the first time.

Am puzzled by automobiles in the story. Almost all mentions of them seem 
to say they are two wheeled vehicles - though there appears to be a 
comfortable cabin for the passengers.

Were 4 wheeled cars not yet popular in US when these stories were 
published? Or is it one of the futuristic techs of author?
