	James Blish mentioned writing a story meant to deliberately 
imitate 'Surface Tension'; I imagine that has to be 'The Thing In The 
Attic'.  There he was pretty explicitly trying to duplicate a story 
that worked commercially and artistically, which makes a pretty good 
motive.  

	Of course, 'Surface Tension' was itself written and rewritten 
several times over, and he would do things like turn 'Beep' into a 
barely longer novel with ease.  


	I recall Asimov once accidentally rewriting pretty much the 
whole of a very early and poor short-short and having it turn out to 
be a slightly more polished but not good short-short, mostly because 
he forgot the first had ever existed.  Another time he duplicated one 
of his Fantasy and Science Fiction essays, but he realized it shortly 
after fini****ng and didn't publish the duplicate.  I think he had to 
replace it with something about vitamins.
